Saints started their League Cup defence at local rivals Fleet Star and were made to fight for it.

Saints started brightly and scored after 30 minutes when Craig Rudd hit his eighth goal in seven games. Gary King nearly made it two but his long range effort came back off the crossbar.

Star equalised in the second half with 10 minutes remaining when substitute Kevin Jamieson reacted first to a loose ball in the box to fire his shot into the roof of the net. Saints however were not to be denied the victory, with two minutes remaining Gary King found himself with space and time to hit the winner into the top corner from 20 yards out.
